April 1946: Osaka, Japan – Takeshi Godai wanted to create a high-quality, Japanese-crafted loudspeaker. He founded Onkyo, which means “sound acoustics” in Japanese, to bring his vision of sound perfection to life. A month later, Onkyo released its first product – a cartridge pickup for record players. The company took the profits from that initial offering and invested in speaker research and infrastructure to build a factory. Production would go on to begin at the new factory in January 1948. In defiance of convention, Onkyo developed an in-house production method for its own paper cones—and in so doing, formed the origin of the Onkyo sound story.

Today, Onkyo continues to break new ground. In 2020, 11 Trading Company was formed in the U.S. to continue the distribution of Onkyo AV Receivers, HiFi equipment, mini-systems, smart speakers, turntables, sound bars, home theater systems, and optical disc players.

Our aim for the next century is further refinement of our advanced music reproduction technology in order to create a new Onkyo that will become a more familiar name to people throughout the world.

Over the past decade, Onkyo has expanded its core of music-oriented products to become one of the most respected names in home theater systems. The company’s recently launched multimedia division is also bringing high-quality sound systems to the world of home computers and videogame systems.

While many manufacturers are intent on building components at affordable prices, Onkyo has a different vision. Their approach is to perfect the basics, leave out the frills, pay attention to details, and use only the finest parts. The company is dedicated to establishing a de facto standard for quality in the A/V industry, and all of its production facilities are ISO 9001 certified to meet or exceed the highest international manufacturing standards. The results can be seen in the obviously high-quality of any Onkyo manufactured product even before it is turned on.

Onkyo is a Global business with localized products, making high-quality entertainment available to the public world wide.
