Never go to a movie theater again!

Reviewer: Brian  from Albuquerque   03/23/06
I can't praise this system highly enough. It is big and heavy and produces big sound. I used to have a little sony system with the cube speakers that hide on the shelf. When we moved to a house with room for a dedicated home theater we wanted to upgrade to some big sound and this system delivers magnificently. We were watching U-571 last week. We could hear the water around us when the ship dived. Every ping and drip completey surrounded us. Our neighbor actually called us during the depth charge scene to make sure we were okay because she heard all the banging--and we don't live in an apartment, this was the house across our side yard!

Get a front projector and you will never go to a movie theater again. That's what we did and now all the money we spent at movie theaters goes to DVDs.

Just about the best home theater system ever

Reviewer: Rmae  from Sacramento   02/12/06
Considering what you get for the price, how can this not be the best home theater around?

Onkyo knows how to put together a grrreat sounding, easy to hookup system. A few tweaks here and there and things sound even better!

Some things to try:

Set the front and center speakers to 'Large". That lets you turn on the Double Bass. Turn that on.

Turn on R-EQ -- I don't know what it does but it makes things sound better!

Great System at Right Price

Reviewer: Kevin  from Tennessee   08/12/05
Unlike many HTIB systems in this price range, this is not a small receiver-dvd player with tiny little satellite speakers. The receiver is physically big with fairly big speakers that don't hide away unnoticed. And that is one of the things I like about it--it looks like a real audio system. And, happily, it performs like one too. You will have to buy your own DVD/CD player if you don't already have one--which is exactly what I wanted, so I can put more money into a better dvd player later on rather than compromise now to get it all at once at this price. The sound of this system is really good--going from using the built in speakers on the TV to using this was amazing. It has all the power needed to fill a somewhat large room where I have set up the TV. Classical music CDs sound great too. I highly recommend this system.

I purchased this product refurbished from shoponkyo.com. I was a little worried that a refurbished unit might look a little ragged, but it was in new condition when it arrived. I haven't had one issue with it in 6 months of ownership. It sounds great and the subwoofer will definitely put out some bass. There's a lot of connections on the receiver allowing for hookup of several different items. It's a very versatile receiver with a lot of features. For someone on a budget this is a great system.

I went to Circuit City with my mind intent on a Sony HTIB system, but they were out of stock. Luckily, the sales person there gave this Onkyo system a raving review, and played the water fight scene from Hero for me. Every nuance of sound was clear on the system, and I was convinced to get it.

I currently am running a Panasonic AE700U projector with this Onkyo system, and the combination is amazing. Thanks for such a groundbreaking product Onkyo

After having this system for over 6 months now, I feel that paying anything less than 500 US dollars for this system should be a felony. Like others have noted, upgrade to 16g speaker wire, and you will shake the walls. I'm a college student with a computer constantly playing music 24/7, and as loud as possible when i can. This system has kept ticking, and plays even better for movies. This is the best entry level system, and best deal I have seen to date. I'm proud to be an onkyo owner.

We have used the Onkyo HTS-770 for almost four weeks now on almost a daily basis, and we just love it. I don't know how anyone could do better for the price. The sound for DVDs is incredible! We put in Pirates of the Caribbean and felt like we were on the ship, and the music was wonderful. Even though it is best with DVDs with digital sound, this system works very well for music CDs which is what we mostly use it for. I am a COMPLETE novice in setting up a system of any kind, but I found this one was quite simple to set up. Even though it sounds great right out of the box, after reading other users comments, I did replace the original speaker wire with 16 guage speaker wire, and I could tell a difference for the better -- more sound at a lower volume, and more subtle sounds were louder. I replaced the subwoofer connection, too. Also, the replacement of the wire did cause the receiver to run cooler. By the way, this receiver needs room to breathe. The manual says to leave 8" of space on the top and back of the receiver, and it would be wise to do this as much as possible. The receiver does get quite warm, and enclosing it in one of those tight spaces that some entertainment centers have would not be a good thing to do. Reading the manual and learning how to use the remote control will take a little time, but it can be done. For the price, this system would be hard to beat -- and I looked and listened to a lot of them! The only complaint I would have is that the size of these speakers are a little ungainly -- especially the subwoofer, but the trade off in sound is worth it. If you're looking for a HTIB for $500 or under, you can't go wrong with this one.

I bought this system refurbished from the onkyo website for my hubby for christmas.. I didn't know what system to get him, so I spent hours and hours on the internet reading reviews at various sites.. This system had the best reviews in the price range I wanted to stay in.. according to many websites it was even comparable with the more expensive setups.. I don't know since I am not a home audio person, but I will tell you to me this system sounds awesome! My husband was very impressed in my choice and was very happy and suprised..The only downfall if you want to call it one is the speaker size, they just look like speakers to me, just a little large and heavy. My only mistake is that I didn't get a high enough quality speaker stand and the weight and size of the speaker made it very unstable..They hit the floor a couple times after being knocked by kids and dogs.I am going to try a metal stand this time.. I wish onkyo made stands specific to these speakers, if they do I am not aware of them...I would also like to mention we have not had any problems with our refurbished unit, it has always worked just like new. All in all we are very happy with our purchase and would recommnd this system to anyone..

I have owned other Onkyo products like the 3099 Pre-Amp , 5099 Power Amp, tuner and CD player and I have had no problems with any of the products that I have purchased. I have always respected the Onkyo name as a name that stands for Quality. When I started to look for a Home theater system I did alot of research to find the right system at the right price. After weeks of research, I finaly decided on the Onkyo HT-S770. I couldn't be happier! I bought the system at Fry's Electronics for a steal of a price $399.00. It was on sale for one day only at that price. If you are looking for a QUALITY product at a great price, look no further than the Onkyo HT-S770.

Reviewer: DAN L.  from PITTSBURGH, PA   05/14/05
a little bulky and big, but hey it looks impressive! the sound, clarity, and total audio aspects outweighs any inconvieniece as to making room for this monster. Once your hear this system perform, you know that you'll need a top of the line video source to go w/ it.

Put a deccent 42" lcd or if you have the room you can put a 100" top of the line dlp projection sys. that will blow you away for under two grand. I'm talking audio, video, screen, cable mounts, etc. - important - replace speaker wire w/ at least 16 gauge.

Reviewer: Jim  from Missouri   04/22/05
Bought this model at Circuit City web site for a great deal. Took it home and hooked it up with the wires it came with. Terrific sound. Took the salesman's advice and bought a digital component cable to use from the DVD player to the Onkyo receiver to hear my DVDs in 5.1 and 6.1 sound. What a difference an $8.00 cable from Walmart made, I could not believe my ears and my wife could not believe the smile between the ears :) When and you will, buy this system, you have to get the DVD ( House Of Flying Daggers ) Select the English version on the main menu, unless you can speak Chinese. The sound effects on this DVD are unreal, so crank it up and heck with the neighbors.

Everyone says to upgrade the speaker wires, man, if the sound is this great using the thin wires, I can't wait to upgrade to 16 gauge wire.

I read many reviews on the DV-CP702 6 disc DVD changer, that I’m going out to purchase it tomorrow. I sampled it in the store and it was a perfect match for the HT-S770.

Check out the internet for prices. I bought mine for $449.00 on Circuit Citys web site and they even had a promotion that gave me a 10% of purchase gift card with it. So all together I paid $400.00, not lying check out the site yourselves. Also they were giving "FREE" delivery with it. I did not use the free delivery though. I was so excited to get my new toy home, I picked it up myself. I have a 2003 Gran Prix, so I had to take the units out of the big box. I put some in the trunk and the rest in the back seat with no problems.

Everything aside, really, if you want a great sounding system that will piss-off your brother-in-law, because his $2000.00 bose doesn't sound as good, then buy the HT-S770 for under $500.00 at just about any place you see it. The two year parts and service warranty is nice also. Hope you have a smile on your face soon and I promise your wife will love it too.

Reviewer: Gary  from New Jersey   03/24/05
This is a great system for under $500. Took a little while to figure out how to set it up, but that's just me. The sound is fantastic. The weight of the receiver I found to be very reasonable compared to my last Harmon Kardon. Is does get very hot however. These receivers should come with built in fans. The setup of the speakers for sound testing and adjusting is very easy to use. I learned the hard way that you want to use component video, your tv, dvd and receiver all have to have inputs - this receiver does not convert component to s-video. My TV doesn't have component, so I had to go with s-video all the way. It was nice to see the multiple optical inputs as I hooked up 2 dvd's to the receiver on seperate channels. Works like a charm. I would recommend this set to anyone on a budget for a home theater.

Refurbed HT-S770

Reviewer: Jeff Kurnit  from New Jersey   03/18/05
I was impressed with all of the reviews I read about this HTIB. I was also impressed by the reviews I read regarding Onkyo factory refurbs. Having decided on the HT-S770 I was dissapointed that the Onkyo site was not offering any refurbs of this model through their website. I did however stumble on an Onkyo factory refurbished HT-S770 available through J&R Music world in NYC for an incredible $249.

I drove into the city to pick it up and save the shipping charges. When unpacked, the system looked brand new. After hooking it up with my own 16G speaker wire I was dissapointed to see that the receiver was defective. It would turn itself off as soon as it powered on... some kind of thermal protection. J&R was great about taking it back and exchanging it, no problem.

I'm happy to report that the exchange was also in pristine condition, and works flawlessly. The sound is AWESOME, better than many, many component systems I listened to costing well over $1,000. The one year Onkyo warranty made risking a refurb a "no-brainer". The cheapest price on the web was $449 from Circuit City. I saved $200 and essentially was able to buy an upconversion DVD player with my savings.

I'm thrilled with my choice and would highly reccomend this system, especially the great deal on the refurb.

this thing rocks

Reviewer: Don  from Georgia   03/17/05
We have been without a home theater system for a little while, and this thing rocks . Every tone can be heard clearly at any volume. At louder settings, everything is crystal clear. The remote is espansive and can be confusing at first, but isn't difficult after a few uses. The speakers are all color coordinated for easy setup. The receiver is well laid out for function control. My only complaint is for a HTIB this is a little complicated to wire correctly for all the functions. Other all in one systems may be easier, but you lose the option to expand or replace items. With the option of change comes a more difficult setup. Worth it though.

Onkyo is top of the line

Reviewer: Andrew F  from San Ramon, CA   03/14/05
I recently sold my Onkyo HT-S760 model to get the 770 and let me tell you it was worth it. This system is untouchable when it comes to HTIB, sure it's not audiophile perfect, it's not meant to be, If you are an audiophile you are not going to buy a home theater in a box anyways you are going to spend around$2000-$5000 building your own.. It is the best system you could buy for $399 (I got mine at Fry's). The Prologic 2x is a real treat and the up conversion for Dolby Digital and DTS makes the pot even sweeter.(you can set it so that it will play 5.1 movies in 6.1). A feature sorely lacking on the previous model. 6.1 is definitely worth it, I was skeptical at first when I bought the 760, but now I cannot live without it. The system doesn't handle music that well but it is a home theater system and it delivers on that (I watched the grudge and actually jumped when the music got loud twice). The remote is big and will take a few weeks to learn all of the features even for someone like me who had owned Onkyo's previous model. Onkyo is the only HTIB company I would buy from, I had Sony HTIB's but now they are horrible. Every one I have tried needs the volume to be up to 35- 40 just to be heard. This system is extremely powerful, and extremely impressive, they actually out did themselves with 1 coaxial, and 3 optical inputs. This is the one to own, I cannot believe I got this much power for only $399. Make sure to upgrade the speaker wire, and sub cable to Monster and you will be good to go.

I was really looking for a great Home Theater system that didn't cost more than $500.00 dollars and after doing some thorough investigating I decided to purchase the HT-S770 from Circuit City. I must admit I was a little skepticle because my speakers started smoking the next day(???????). CC replaced it and even with the standard 22 Gauge wiring the system sounds awesome. I just purchased a roll of 16 Gauge OFC wiring and I know it will only enhance the already great sound of this system. You can't beat the quality and price and dare you to find one better, cause I tried and Sony, and the others sounded frail in comparison to the 770.

Purchasd HT-S770 on-line from Circuit City and installed it yesterday. The surround sound is incredible, and the sound from CD's was so clear at a loud volume I couldn't stop smiling. Also purchased the Monster cable for the Sub-Woofer and better wiring for the speakers. Still under $500.00 for a professonal sound. I am very pleased and would stongly recommed considering Onkyo if you are comparing systems.

HT-S770 Review

Reviewer: David Podsedly  from Hendersonville, NC   02/16/05
I have been researching home theater systems for several months. I was looking for an affordable system that could not only do a good job with DVD movies & sound but was good enough to replace my very decent audio system of several years age. I was very skeptical on how good these HTIB are for playing CDs and was therefore leaning to separate components from different manufacturers. Because of the current Circuit City special on the HT-S770 system, I decided to take the plunge. I am extremely satisfied with the HT-S770 and the DV-CP702 DVD changer. I think that these are unbelievably good products for the money.

Reviewer: Jon  from Indianapolis   02/10/05
For the price (<$500), the 770 can't be beat. Outstanding sound quality for music and crisp loud sound for DVDs. The sound while watching movies will rattle the windows, while soft jazz sounds rich and full. Speakers and receiver have very good build quality - very sturdy. The included speaker wire is too thin - recommend upgrading to 16 ga wire (makes a huge difference). Receiver has all the features you could ask for in an entry-level unit - Dolby Digital, DTS, etc. decoding. The Pro Logic II mode also does a great job of converting a 2-channel stereo signal to a full 6.1 surround sound signal. Would highly recommend this unit to anyone looking to upgrade their surround sound system, without breaking the bank.

I thought I knew what great home theater sound was, but now I really know! This unit sounds incredible, just like in the movie theater. Crystal clear highs and lows and thundering bass is what you get. I made myself crazy shopping in stores and online and can honestly tell you not to waste your time. This system is the bomb!!!!! My oldest son helped me with the simple set up on super bowl Sunday and he was so impressed that he ordered one online for himself from 6th ave.com. For $424.00 plus 6 cents shipping. Take my word for it and just buy it as you will be thrilled. Thanks Onkyo, you have outdone yourself this time, as i cant believe this system performs way better than other systems I've looked at costing hundreds of dollars more.

I had purchased another well known brand 600W Home Theater System, only to find out that its power was so "wimpy" that it couldn't amplify the sound from my satellite TV.

I had never heard nor seen an ONKYO product, so I bought this system based on the reviews at this web site which were 100-percent favorable. I went to Fry's Electronics to see and listen to the system - - the salesman told me that I could plug the sub-woofer into the receiver, but after seeing the conflicting wattage ratings, I contacted ONKYO to see if he was telling the truth. I never received a reply to my inquiry.

I have just watched "I, Robot" and was amazed how this system immersed me into the movie with its reproduction of the sound. I don't regret the purchase, in fact, it is the most pleasing purchase I have ever made of an electronics item.

Some of the reveiwers at this site remark that they found no "blemishes" on their refurbished purchase. I think that they are counfusing "refurbished" with a "scratch and dent" sale. When a system is returned to the manufacturer because of failure or damage, it is torn down to its individual components which are tested for 'pass" or "fail". When a refurbished system is rebuilt, most, if not all of the components are "used" and that is why the manufacturer does not warrant the unit as long as they do a "new" system. That is not a bad thing, because only a small percentage of the components in a "new" system are tested for quality control. If it works at the end of the manufacturing process, then it is assumed that all of the components were good.

I used optic cable for sound and the seperation is great. Setup was easy enough but I have been installing computer systems for 30 years so maybe I have a little experiance with wiring. Receiver runs a little hot so give it some room to vent. Still experimenting with different settings but that is just me. I would recommend this system to anyone.

Have nothing but great things to say about your HT-S770. Got it from Fed-EX in 3 business days and the driver not only helped me bring it in the house...he stayed and helped me get it out of the box.

He said he had a old Onkyo and loved it and wanted to see the one that I had purchased. Got it hooked up and me and my son (18) kept my wife up all night playing Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon. The sound and craftmanship are amazing. My son just purchased a $2500 bose system and is pissed off because the Onkyo blows it away....thanks...keep up the good work and products.

I purchased a refurbished unit for my husband for Christmas-- What a hit!! I researched similiar productsfor almost 2 weeks and nothing came close at this price. We are so happy with the product. The sound is wonderful. The speakers are a bit large but no one really notices them once you start a movie. My only complaint is that the free speaker stands that came with the unit were not mailed with it-- in fact, Onkyo did not ship it until after I called to say I still hadn't received it 6 days after placing the order-- It then took another 5 days to arrive at my home. Onkyo customer service was very pleasant to deal with- friendly and fast. We look forward to purchasing Onkyo products in the future.

A phenomenal system

Reviewer: J.J.  from San Marcos, Texas   01/06/05
The Onkyo Ht-S770 is a wonderful Home Theater in a Box. I upgraded from a 5 year old Aiwa and couldn’t be happier. I didn't realize how outdated my old system was until now. This system is extremely clean sounding. I am amazed at how clear everything sounds from: Cd's, to Dvd's and my X-box. Watching movies have no become even more enjoyable then I thought possible. Like everyone else has said a few things need to be mentioned right off the bat.

1. HUGE BOX

2. The speaker wire HAS to be upgraded.

3. The Receiver gets HOT so make sure its got room to "breathe"

4. Be prepared to tweak and play with the settings. To make this thing sound its best you need to tweak for a while. (Which can be a good thing.)

My only complaint with this system is the remote. The remote has an on button and a separate standby (off) button. I have a really nice universal remote I would rather use than the factory Onkyo remote and I had to program a separate key to turn the system off. All of those are minor inconveniences for such a wonderful system.

And the last thing to mention is: be prepared to spend a good bit of money on wires. Fiber optic for the audio is worth taking advantage of (if your components can handle it) but it adds up fast since you also need s-video cables etc...... I didn't realize what I was getting myself into when i decided to get "decent" audio and video connections for this thing.

I read everything I could find about home theatre systems for less than $1,000. The HT-S770 was praised almost universally. The only common complaints were over size of the speakers (too bulky) and the included speaker wire (too thin). My experience ratifies the praise. The system's performance is incredible and I doubt that equal sound could come from smaller speakers (at least none even close to a comparable price). I replaced the supplied speaker wire with 16 ga. Found the amp ran cooler as well as clearer sound.I definatly recommend the HT-s770 without reservation.

i was looking forward to buying a couple of speakers and a sub since i had a busted speaker on my panasonic surround receiver. after doing my homework i realized it was better to buy a whole system than to get the matching speaker and sub... powered, since i had a passive one... well i found out this system was available as refurb through J and R at 300.00 shiped at 345.00. awsome sound .... it has the most amazing sound i have heard. clean, clear powerful. the sub is great 220 watts!!

I set it up and fiddled with it for a bit and it was great to discover so many surround options in the book... i normally dont read them... i recomend this system to anyone...

my only problem is the remote doesnt control any of my components, none of the codes work, but i have always had each remote handy all the time so its not a loss. it would have been great if it did work so i can count down from 4 remotes to maybe 2... but well the sound is great after u are watching a movie all u need the remote for is the volume anyway....

great job onkyo... i got nothing to envy anyone with a bose, and i saved me about 800.00 of a comparable bose system.

1st: The first unit I ordered arrived only two days after ordering from shoponkyo.com! Unfortunately it was damaged by the carrier. Onkyo provided outstanding customer service though and sent the replacement unit overnight. Wow!

2nd: I ordered a refurbished unit--great discount on the price. The system looked great--the only way I could tell it was refurbished was the sticker on the bottom of the receiver, no batteries were included with the remote (as stated on the web site), and the speaker owners manual was a photocopy. Again--Wow!

3rd: The unit works great and sounds great. The subwoofer really shakes the room. The other speakers sound nice as well. I did upgrade to 12 guage speaker cable and a Monster subwoofer connector.

4th: I don't know of any better value. Excellent product, excellent price, bonus points--I will be buying more products direct from shoponkyo.com. I really thought I would have to spend a lot more money (and wait a lot longer) to get a system this nice. Thanks Onkyo.

Unbelievable System!

Reviewer: Matadi  from Houston, Texas   12/31/04
I've had my HT-S770S for about two weeks and finally hooked it up yesterday. I just bought a new house so I've been waiting on the satelitte guy. If you're looking for a home theatre system and decide to buy something else, you clearly need your head examined, just go to the nearest circuit city and you'll see what I'm talking about. This system is unbelievable, I can tell you right now, my neigbors aren't going to be happy people around here. This system is so powerful, and for the price and sound quality, I really can't tell the difference between this system and the highly expensive Bose. I tested it yestreday by watching "Red Dragon", and I really thought I was at the cinema, not even kidding; of course without the buttery popcorn. Installation was quite easy, fine tuning it was a little complicating at first but once I got it adjusted to my liking, sound quality was unheard. I did a lot of researching and reviewing for about three months before I finally decided to purchase one of these bad boys and I'm so thankful I was patient and did my homework. For this price and plus the free speaker stands and free shipping, there's just no other better deal. Of course, the speaker wires and the sub-woofer connection wire were chessy, but I upgraded everything with Monster Cables even purchased the Monster HT-1000 power surge just to protect my investment including my nice Hitachi 57S715 Big Screen. I was skeptical at first, but Onkyo has definetly propelled themselves on my list as one of the leaders in audio products. Oh, and the wife loves it, but she doesn't like it to loud but it's my toy not hers, so she'll have to get use to it.

Great System!

This system has a great sound for the price. You would pay $1,000 plus to get a Bose--this system gives you the power, bass and performance for a fraction of the price of other home systems. If your looking for a system that rocks--get this!

This is my first real sound system and was not sure what to expect. I did a lot of shopping and research before I found HT-S770. I couldn’t believe the price for what you get. My shopping stopped and I purchased it for my Christmas gift. I also bought all high quality Monster connections and 16g speaker wire, (I wanted the best sound possible). The set-up was simple even for a beginner and the sound is incredible I couldn’t be happier. That 220W Sub rocks the house and everything is crisp and clear. I am hooked, thanks Onkyo.

Great HTiB value

Reviewer: Jesse  from Appleton, WI   12/29/04
Just like every other owner of this system, you can search all you want, and you can't find a better value in home theater systems than the HT-S770. You might be able to find a better receiver for the price, but you'd have to drop at least $200 or $300 to get a set of speakers similar to these, and you're still not getting the MONSTER sub. The receiver is VERY full featured, and has plenty of inputs (read through the manual and you'll see what I mean). I may upgrade the speakers at a later date - I've already replaced the center channel, but for now, I feel it was a very good "bang for the buck" purchase.

this system is the best

I own 3 Onkyo 1000 systems - one each for my family room, study, and upstairs master bedroom - and I do not believe there is a better system on the market. The sound is awesome. My family room is 22x20 with 18 foot ceilings. We hooked the system up with my 65" HDTV. The sound is so loud and so clear that it vibrates the glass top of my cocktail table so that the glasses migrate and fall off if not caught. The kids love it. We have not come close to peak power yet.

A couple of review have complained about the sound and I suspect I know the problem: you need to upgrade use Monster Cables and gold connectors. The wires that come with the set are inferior and cannot handle the signal over any distance. Purchasing the cables and connectors was an unexpected surprise - cost was about $445 per system - but the system cannnot be operated at its full potential without the upgrade.

If you hook up the system with the gold connectors and Monster cables, however, the resultctric. My children do indeed jump from their seats. You really feel that you are in a movie theater, or better than that. I cannot recommend the system too highly. It simply dwarfs the competition, especially at the price.

My honest opinion of htis system .....

Reviewer: Nick  from Hackettstown, NJ   12/28/04
Hey folks ..... I just received my HT-S770 3 days ago for X-mas. I've read all the reviews and the specs and I couldn't wait to hook this bad boy up. Anticipating that I would go with a 6.1 system, I pre-ran 16ga speaker wire to the back of my living room last year during some home renovations. My living room is approx 15ft wide and 17ft long. My TV is a Toshiba HD 53" rear projection and my sitting position is approx 11ft away from the TV smack dab in the middle of the room.

I must say the sound is nice but not the best. Not as clear as I expected after reading all the reviews. After 24 hours of gentle "break-in", I decided to test the subwoofer to see how much kick it can produce. The first DVD that I grabbed was Lost In Space ...... I watched the begining..... the fight scene. I was not impressed. The subwoofer was cracking abit too much for my liking. Here is my setup and my settings ......

All speaker wires 16ga

Subwoofer set to MAX (on the rear of the unit)

Sub channel set to +5db gain

DVD audio connected via coax not optical.

Speaker x-over, distance, etc..... configured correctly.

Sub is exactly 1/3 of the wall width in

Now this could just be that I pushed the sub alittle to far but honestly, it wasn't even that loud. I hope I don't have a defective unit.

Overall sound is clear but with some muffle. Could be better IMO.

I will play around some more with the settings and also relocated the woofer. (possiblly change the sub cable) I will write another review decribing my conclusions.

Other things:

- Remote control is of cheap quality but gets the job done. NO support for Motorola cable boxes (:thumbs down:)

- Instruction manual could describe the sound options alittle better. (IE: Whats available when and why ....etc..)

- 4 digital audio inputs!!! (:two thumbs up:)

- Speaker standing for the fronts would have been nice even for non-refurbished units!

- Speakers are solid and heavy for their size. Ok in my book!

- Center speaker could have been of better quality and better sensitivity. Dialogue makes or breaks a movie

Am I disappointed, NO! I still think its a decent system for the money.

I too have read all the great reports on this system and when i had to make my choice there was no other choice. I read every one talking about the wire and me wanting the most out of the system I upgraded all the wire to the best you can buy. sad to say that all the monster cable and optical wire cost me more then what i paid for the whole system. For the first test we bought Jurassic Park. To watch the boys jump out of thier seats during the movie and the little one come running over to me and hide, I'm more than happy with our new system. that was my goal to bring the movies to life and thanks to this system I have.

HT-s770 is awesome

Reviewer: Don Rickertsen  from Birmingham, Alabama   12/26/04
I read everything Google could find about home theatre systems for less than $1,000. The HT-S770 was praised almost universally. The only common complaints were over size of the speakers (too bulky) and the included speaker wire (too thin). My experience ratifies the praise but not the complaints. The system's performance is incredible and I doubt that equal sound could come from smaller speakers (at least none even close to a comparable price). I can't even fault the admittedly unimpressive looking speaker wire. I used the included wire for my initial hook-up and it sounds so good that I may not bother to use heavier wire for my permanent hook-up. I recommend the HT-s770 without reservation.

I shopped around several days looking at different brands of component systems before purchasing the HT-S770. I debated getting an "all-in-one" system because I was told that component systems would sound better. Not in this case. I hooked the system up and positioned the speakers, and after a little tweaking on the amplifier settings, I was good to go. The sound was incredible on my standard CDs and particularly on DTS/Dolby Digital DVD movies (through optical connection), crisp highs, and deep bass that enveloped my entire living room. The bottom line is, you can keeping shopping around, won't find any product of this high of quality for the price.

I just received my refurbished HT-S770 from shoponkyo.com last week and I couldn't be happier. It only has two VERY TINY scratches on the face of the receiver that you can barely see...everything else is perfectly new.

The important thing is, this system sounds great! OK, this is my first home theater system, but I'm a long-time musician (trumpet player) and I know great sound when I hear it. Sure, some MUCH more expensive systems might be proven to sound better when tested side-by-side, but you are not going to beat this one for $340 shipped...even $500 in the retail stores is a deal. In my opinion, the tiny satellite fronts and surrounds that most other brands are using just don't cut it. In hot-rodding terms, there's no replacement for displacement...

The sound is clean and powerful. You won't be disappointed if you're shopping in this price range or even double!

Unbelievably great sound

This system definitely outperforms Bose and all the HTIBs under $1000. It delivers very precise sound picture. I especially love its soft-silky tweeters. After you customize it for your sitting position (you can even adjust the volume level of each individual speaker!), it sounds amazing.

Well packed, easy to install and set-up. It was worth every single penny I paid for it, and it did make me happy! Thanks Onkyo!!!

For anyone that is looking to buy a Home Theater in a box, I highly reccomend this package. To me, it beats those 2000 dollar packages from Bose. The sound quality is excellent, and its crisp and clear. The Bass from the powered subwoofer is strong, in fact I dont have mine turned all the way up! Setup and installation was easy and simple, however the owner's manual could be a little informative. Also change the speaker wires, I feel they were small for the wattage, I used 16ga. wire and can tell a difference. I also recommend the Monster subwoofer cable. This product supports a lot of audio formats, and is easy to operate.

Overall, I would Highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking to spend around 500 dollars and get an excellent system. To me it beats those higher priced systems hands down. I really like this product, as I upgraded from a Panasonic home theater system. Great system, I am throughly impressed with it!

I have had an Onkyo 5.1 system for several years and bought this to hook up to an HDTV in another location. As with the 5.1 system, I have been quite pleased. It is a very good value for the price, and the sound reproduction is first rate. Upgrading the subwoofer cable and the speaker wire did make a big difference. Take a look at the speaker and subwoofer dimensions before you buy -- the subwoofer is quite large and the front speakers are on the large end of "bookshelf" size. Also, if you're planning on picking this up at a store, it may not fit in a regular sedan. I'm somewhat dubious about what benefit I'm getting from the extra rear speaker, but 6.1 seems to be the current trend. I would buy this product again.

Great stereo. It's very powerful. Sounds great. Wish they came with some thicker speaker wires though. I went out and bought some 16 gauge wires and the sound quality was much better. I use it everyday while watching TV and DVDs. Sound is awsome. I wish the subwoofer had an on/off switch though. It just stays on all the time and is sucking up electricity. All in all, the entertainment package is worth its price, if not more.

After reading a lot of reviews for various home theater systems, I settled on the Onkyo HT-S770.

The refurbished option was a pleasant surprise, as was the chance to save a few more bucks by joining Club Onkyo. At the end of the day, I feel like I got a $450 - $500 system for about $350.

The system just arrived a few hours ago, which was right on schedule. Strangely, the web site never showed tracking information. The system is already unboxed and set up, and I'm pleased with the sound.

Now, if I can just figure out how to get these huge speakers out of my 16 month old son's reach before he wakes up, I'll be in great shape...

HT-S770 Refurb is GREAT!

I ordered an HT-S770 refurb from shoponkyo.com for $349 (& got $10 off that for joining the club). It arrived in only 2 days, and you can't beat free shipping! The subwoofer has a slightly damaged corner and one of the surround speakers has a minor defect in the wood on top. Neither of these is noticeable in the room, and everything else about the system looks and works perfectly. I would definitely recommend refurbs from Onkyo.

The system fills up our living room wonderfully. I love the features of this system and the ability to customize the sound. DVD movies are an entirely different experience for us now--WOW! Music sounds great on this system, too. I shopped around alot, and from the reviews I read on several sites, Onkyo seemed like the way to go--I now heartily agree!

Ordered a refurbished unit from the Onkyo website in September 2004 ($399-10 pts for signing up with Club Onkyo = $389 shipped. Wow! Got it in about 3 or 4 days, too). After having it for three months, I'm definitely not disappointed. The unit sounds fantastic. The speakers are quite a bit larger than most HTIBs, but there's obviously a benefit to not getting the skimpy ones that come with most systems (i.e., they sound good). Video switching is nice; I look forward to upgrading my TV so that I can use the component video switching, too (only composite right now): I concur with others who have said that the remote isn't the greatest (many, many very small buttons; doesn't control my Motorola digital cable box) and that the speaker wire it comes with is way too small. However, I had plenty of 12 gauge wire from my previous system, and my old universal/learning remote works for every function I use but "stand by."

Any minor problems are dwarfed, however, by how the unit sounds. When my wife's not around (she likes to be able to hear herself think), my 3-year-old son and I crank the volume up just shy of where it starts rattling things in the house (easy to do with 1000 W at your disposal) and dance around like madmen. The sound is crystal clear. When my wife and I are watching a DVD, the digital input and Dolby Digital processing, when coupled with the 6 surround speakers, completely envelope you with sound.

Finally, like most home theater receivers, there are several different types of processing you can do. Sure, they all sound great -- and much less "processed" than some I've heard on other systems -- but what's nice is that you can choose plain old "stereo" (which uses the sub and FR and FL only) if you want to hear the piece as it was recorded.

I love this system, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to buy a $1000 system at less than half that price.

I bought this refurbished system from shoponkyo.com. It comes with two speaker stands. totally $350 shipped. Althought its marked as refurbished, but it looks like brand new and I could not find a trace of demage.

Pros: sound quality is terrific. High power. Easy to setup.

Cons: no signal conversion, so if you have components using different sources, you have to connect every one to your TV and switch both tv and this receiver. Bulky remote control and it could not control most of my other component. The cable comes with this receiver is in low quality.

It looks like more cons than pros, but with this price you can't complain it. Overall, I am very satisfied.

I would reccomend this to people WANTING to spend a lot of money. My wife wanted a $1200 system, but when she heard the HT-S770 she was sold on Onkyo. And it was only $470 w/ free shipping. You see, sometimes the man is right. HEHEHE.

Excellent System

Reviewer: Fred  from Pittsburgh, PA   11/20/04
My decision to purchase this system was largely based on the strong reviews on Cnet and similar sites, combined with the HT-770's excellent potential for future upgrades.

Surround effects are remarkably natural. I've heard details in DTS and DD soundtracks that never appeared on my old 5.1 system. Dialogue is clear, and the subwoofer produces clean bass without sounding "boomy."

The receiver/speaker combination handles music with equal aplomb. I've found that classical music often tests a reciever's mettle, but the music sounds warm and lush, yet precise and detailed.

Strengths, in addition to those listed above:

Connectivity: 4 digital inputs, 4 composite/S video, 2 Component.

Color coded binding posts.

Ability to customize crossover frequency, tone, speaker size, etc.

Suggested improvements:

I replaced the stock wiring with 16 gauge speaker wire, with pin connectors.

All-in-all, an excellent system!

Worth it

Everything I wanted in surround sound except a high price. I purchased this based on several sales folks who said this was a good value (performance/price). Up to this point I have had individual components and a separate prologic processor. The configuration created lots of ground loops and hum. It was also difficult for my family to use. I always wanted a sub as well. As a former Heathkit employee and sales experience in audio, I wanted something with good specs not 1%THD like others in this price range. The speakers supplied are good sounding, but I may try my old more expensive speakers to see which is better.

You would be hard pressed to find a better deal. Watch for specials here and web and local retailers. Then buy and enjoy as I am right now.

A good system for the money. Sufficient power to cover a bedroom or medium living room or similar space. Agree with the comments regarding speaker wires. Was disappointed in the VERY limited "universal" remote which doesn't work for my Motorola cable box, Sony CD changer or Samsung HDTV. It appears that the solution is to purchase the "learning" remote which really ought to be included.

Just purchased and finished setting up this package. I am totally impressed with the sound. I am somewhat of an audiophile who went kicking and screaming into the Home Theater arena. Just didn't think it could compete with the 2 channel monster systems (I had a Rotel system with Sansui XPS 9000 speakers, older system but tried and true). A truly easy set up, took me 1.5 hours from un-pack to jammin'. Only draw back is the packaged wiring, make the upgrade to better speaker wires, coax from the dvd player, and a better sub connection and you will fill the room. I bought the 701 6 DVD changer with it and for under $500 shipped to my door, I am blown away. "Such a Deal"

After comparison shopping online then listening to systems for over a month, I am confident that none of the Sony, JVC, or Panasonic Home theater systems come close to the Onkyo 770 for less than $500.00. This is by no means an 'Audiophile' system, but I wouldn't expect that for the price. This IS a solid, full-featured system with a serious (BIG) 10' powered subwoofer, and large front and center speakers (for a HTiaB system). The 3 rear channel speakers are lower quality than the front, but still do the system justice. The video output quality is great, but I'm just using S-video. The system is capable of component video out, and digital optical audio in/out, so I won't outgrow it when I upgrade my television to HDTV.

The sound is solid and full. The rear center channel brings true 'surround sound' to life. Even my kids and my dog are occasionally startled, thinking someone is in the background, when watching a DTS encoded DVD. You cannot tuly appreciate 'Star Wars Episode II, Attack of the Clones' until you hear the big silver spaceship land and it 'feels' like it's landing on your house!

Wow!

I thought it was finally time to upgrade my old (very old) Dolby Pro Logic system. I bought the HT-S770B a week ago after reading the positive reviews and listening to several systems. It took me a couple of nights to set up and fine tune. This system is amazing! No other system under $1000, and some over, can touch it. Getting better speaker cable is definitey a must though. I got a good 16 gauge, any thicker than that may be overkill. My only other complaint is that I wish the speakers had binding posts like the receiver. But overall, a fantastic bargain.

Excellent Sound System

I bought this system after reading all the positive reviews. It has excellent sound for the price range, very clean and with great bass. The receiver has everything one needs for a straightforward home theater system, including digital inputs and outputs. I'm running this system with a BenQ PE7800 projector on a 92" screen and it's awesome! Only thing I highly recommend is replacing the speaker cables. I bought some 12 gauge wiring and the audio is more clean and vibrant. The wires are all color coded, which makes it very easy to setup.

This unit is incredible.

Whole construction of the system rocks. The bass from the sub is amazing. Could not be happier with this kind of system for under $500. Only drawback is the speaker wire. You have to buy larger gauge wire to enjoy this powerful system.

I had originally purchased a Panasonic tallboy home theater system because of the price (it was on sale) at Circuit City. A few days later I heard this system playing at Circuit City and used my option to trade up as I found this system superior to any other Home Theater system to date. I purchased the 7.1 1000 watt system and then the DV-CP701 DVD player and have been very happy with those choices. The quality of sound is astounding. Why pay for a Bose system when you can get this quality of sound for so much less!!

Great Product and Sevice

I have been look for a home theater system for a long time. I did a lot of research and read great reviews of the HT-S770. I was not disappointed. I think it is the best system for the money. The delivery at Onkyousa was the fastest too.

Great Sound!

after reading all the reviews about HT-S770, which are mostly positive, I was still in doubt. I went local Circuit City to check it out but you know those electronic store setups - they can make anything sound really horrible... anyways, ordered one from shoponkyo.com and never regretted that... this system is GREAT! don't forget to tune it up (go to settings and adjust distances for speakers and etc), it will pay you back. (hard to believe one can get this much sound for not so much money)

The Onkyo HT-S770 is a high tech music work of art. $390.00 total price for a factory reconditioned unit is unbeatable. I added the recond. 701 dvd unit for $99.00 and my house and my 3 Bulldogs are ROCKIN. I changed the speaker wire to 16 gauge and added a monster cable to the subwoofer. Crystal clear sound and awsome bass.

Great value. Great quality

I've waited a long time to make the move to a home theater. After a year of looking around I made the move shortly after going from the 5.1 to 6.1. I'm so glad I waited. The sound quality has been awesome compared to many other systems in addition to custom tailored higher end packages. I'm convinced of the engineering put into this package to integrate the system for an awesome experience.

Great System, Powerful sound!!!!!

This system has good rich sound, and for only $499.00 that will make it the best system money can buy. Only complaint i have is the cheap speaker wire that came with the system, but after upgrading that i am very happy with the quality sound i get when watching movies, listening to music, and best of all playing video games.

Awesome...envy of everyone on my floor!

I'm using this system in a dorm, and well, let's just say it is well recieved by everyone on the floor. This system was a birthday present to be used for years to come, and it will be! I was looking at Yamaha systems and Sony's in the same price range, but this is awesome for the money. The sub puts out enough high-quality, distortion free bass to be heard down the hall, and the speakers are the clearest I've heard for the money. Watching movies is awesome, the surround sound fills the room with extreme clarity. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants great sound on a budget ($500 bucks may not seem small, but in the realm of stereos, it is!) then this is the system for you. Two thumbs up Onkyo! You went from being an unknown to me to my favorite brand!

Awsome sound!!

One of the best theatre in a box values around. Speakers are of wood, which makes the sound very good.

Original receiver was defective, but was exchanged right away without any problems or freight charges.

It's Awesome!!
