Have had this system for about a year now and couldn't be happier. Between my brothers and I we have been listening to Onkyo products for about 20 years and have never been let down. Great system, great sound. I would reccomend Onkyo products to anyone.

Up there with Bose & Sony without getting Bankrupt

I could not believe the sound that comes out of this system. I bought it Referb from Onkyo directly. It was in near new condition. I love it. I recomended this highly.

CNET was on point with their high review. Overall, great sounf at a fantastic price.

Why pay $2000 for Bose or Sony.

Two years now

I've had my HT-S760 for 2 years now and could not be happier. It provides great sound, and I believe it is the best VALUE on the market. I just started shopping for a second system, and am looking only at the various options I can purchase through Onkyo. I love dealing with a sole source provider and the corresponding customer service.

Thx!

Great refurbished HT system

Reviewer: Michael Garcia  from Corona, CA   07/26/05
I bought this refurbished HT-760 system over a year ago for $299, rather than buying it new for $399. I was pleasantly surprised about how much power this system outputs and how cleanly it produced sound. I have it set up in a very large living room and the sub woofer pumps plenty of clean strong thump. By the way, I think this system would be way too powerful for a bedroom, unless the bedroom is very large, or you want thunderous sound. Setup was very easy since it came with color coded wires and color coded jacks. The wires that come with the system are very thin and seem cheap, but my system sounds just fine with them. Upgrading the speaker wires will make this great system even better. I did have one problem though. My refurbished system does not seem to play DTS sound on movies with DTS. I can still listen in a different sound mode, just not DTS (and it still sounds good).

Bottom line is to get this system without hesitation if you want good sound for a low price. Of course it may not compete with the $2000 systems, but for $300 you can not beat it!

connector problem

Reviewer: Frank  from MN   06/07/05
My S760 is a refurbished system. During the last year the front left speaker has occasionally had no sound and a slight twist to the connections could fix the problem. The symptom became worse recently after I upgraded the speaker cables. At one time, the receiver would shutoff immediately after turned on. After close examination of the speaker connector at the receiver end, I noticed the front left speaker terminal was recessed comparing to other terminals. As a result, when the speaker wire is tightly screwed, the wire is pushed in and touched the metal back panel of the receiver. When the paint on the panel was slightly scratched, the back panel caused a short circuit to this speaker. This is clearly a quality problem with the production. I'm surprised the problem was not fixed even after factory service.

unbelievable

Reviewer: Dave  from Pittsburgh   01/24/05
I purchased the 760 system as a christmas gift for myself. It is an unbelievable system. I purchased it reconditioned from Onkyo for $299. The sound from this system is equal to or better than systems that cost over a $1000. The only regret I have is not putting extra insulation in the ceiling when I refinished the basement. It shakes the entire first floor.

Superb Value

Was able to purchase this system for $299 with free speaker stands and the value cannot be beat. Though the speaker stands were free, one was really off-balance despite adjusting the floor spikes. Rather than hassle with returning it, I just put some material under one of the corners instead to make it as level as I could. The sound of the system itself is truly incredible and the sub packs a mighty punch (and it was only set on 50 at the time!). I'm going to upgrade the speaker wire supplied with the system with a higher grade down the road since it appears everyone else has done the same. Overall, I'm more than satisfied with the quality of this product and highly recommend the HT-S670.

The best deal for under $500!

I'm a musician and grew up in a family of audiophiles. I'm also a rational budget minded person. For the sound you can't beat it for the price and vice versa.

The sub is good but not great. It's not as effortless as my father's M&K, but that's to be expected. It's not muddy, it just doesn't hit the lows as well (guessing below ~40Hz it doesn't reach too well). The highs and mids are accurate and transparent.

The front three speakers seem a little large, especially the center speaker. The receiver has most of the features that I'd ever want. And I rarely adjust the tone controls. As I said, you cannot beat this system for the price.

One Word -- AWESOME!!

This system may not be top of the line, but I can assure you it's a lot farther from the bottom of the pack than what most could ever imagine. For a "non-audiophile" that is interested in a complete system that provides exhilerating 6.1 surround sound that truly envelopes you in a movie, then this is your system! Don't go around spending lotsa $$ on some technical review. Spend a reasonable amount on this system put the difference in a mutual fund!

superb sounds

Outstanding entry-level HTIB that will power any room with pure Onkyo sound that will make every single movie in your DVD collection come alive with acoustic surealism.

Nice Home Theater

I bought this last month after returing my sony HT and so far no regrets. Only disadvantage of this HT is big speakers otherwise this HT rocks. You may have to talk to customer support to get this setup correctly. Only problem with onkyo is long waiting time --may be due to short customer support hours or less support staff. But still this is worth buy.

Lots of sound for the money

I had a smaller Theater system and heard the Onkyo system my son in law had. He had done a lot of research and was very happy with his 5.1 system, and I also thought it sounded great. I was able to buy the S760 reconditioned from the Onkyo site for about the same price as his. It came pretty fast in a huge box. Glad I didn't have it delivered to the office. THe only negative were the really bad speaker wires that came with it. And I think the mouse cord on my computer is thicker than the supplied subwoofer cable. I bought 16 gauge wire online as well as a monster sub cable. I also bought a digital audio cable (a must) .All I can say is WOW. THe sub is so loud it shakes the walls and I wasn't even at 50. I now use it for my reciever as well as the theatre system. For the money it is a great value. The speakers are a bit large but fortunatly I have the room for them. Especiallly with the free stands that came with it. I woud definatly recomend this system. I was going to wait for the S770 but I don't know if my room could handle any more watage.

So Far So Good, Kind of

I bought the ht-s760 refurbished. So far im very pleased with the sound and price. I researched many home theaters systems and with this getting a great review from cnet along with getting to hear it at the local circuit city and at the refurbished price, ($299 with free speaker stands) i couldnt pass it up. Now for the bad news....................I also purchased the DV-CP701 6 disc dvd/ cd player and it is going back. It wont load. I wonder how much testing is done before reselling.

Great beginners HTIB

Overall, I have been very pleased with the performance of the HT-S760. I purchased a refurb unit and had difficulties with one of the surround speakers. The customer service was very prompt in correcting this issue. My only complaint is with the relatively large speakers.

I am currently writing this review to save money on a refurbished 670 for my living room. Great website. Great products.

Last years model, but still a great system

This is my second HT system. It replaced a dying Pioneer system I’d purchased as my first all in one Home Theatre System. At the time I paid the extra 50$ for a walk in no questions asked return policy with CompUSA, not knowing if I would ever need it. At the time of purchase though I was a bit nervous about it as it seemed too good to be true (feature wise) for the price I was about to pay for it. That first system lasted a good year and a half before the center channel went out (receiver) which, if you don't already know this, means the voices in movies also go out..

CompUSA had a sale on this Onkyo HT-S760 system (normally 500, on sale for 400) and I had a credit of 300 for my previous system. Wasn't hard math - though I did still have to buy a DVD player which so far has turned out to be the only weakness of this system - more on that in a minute.

For the money, this is an excellent system! Though it isn't a 'top of the line', $2,000+ type system - it is what “most would expect from a HT system, at a price point that fits nicely with almost anyone who has an interest in Home Theatre. The spec sheet on this one is nice, with all the major formats supported. The system also sports a wide range of customizable features which is great for tuning it to your individual needs and tastes.

The receiver itself is beautiful; all black with a brushed metal surface and a clean, semi-symmetric layout. The buttons, display window, and volume knob look and feel like professional grade parts. The body of the unit is made of metal and the unit itself is both large and fairly heavy. The back of the receiver has an equally 'professional' build quality mirroring Onkyo’s higher end receivers in layout and design. The speaker wire terminals are all color coded (both posts and wires) and all the input and outputs are clearly marked.

The speakers themselves are fairly large (next to the smaller satellite type speakers I had with the Pioneer) and sound great. They appear to be of particle board construction with only the front two speakers sporting removable speaker covers. They are all bass reflex type speakers, which from what I've read anyway, is a fairly cheap way to get more volume out of less wattage at the cost of some fidelity. Anyone other than a true audiophile would probably be happy with these – I know I am. The subwoofer is huge, and it sounds great! Next to the receiver, which I love, it's the next coolest thing about the system. It sits on its own wood base with the speaker pointed downward. The bass this system generates is HUGE.

Movie and music playback is awesome. I can't say enough about this part - though I will try to keep it short. Spend some time getting it set up right; set the distance, volume levels for each speaker, and get the tone down to your preference then rent or buy the movie The Borne Supremacy. Be sure to select DTS 5.1 and put the volume at about 50 to 55 and get ready to say WOW.. There is a scene where he goes back to his apartment in Paris that will literally blow you away - and I'll leave it at that.

Back to the DVD player I purchased (that doesn’t come with this system but is made by Onkyo). The player is model DV-SP301 and has all the qualities (or lack thereof) of the Pioneer system I had before. Though it looks a lot like the HT-R510 receiver it sits on, it shares almost none of the same qualities. Instead of a quality brushed metal surface, it’s a plastic face plate made to look brushed. The buttons are cheaper looking and even the display shows off the many ways a company can cut cost. None of this is noticeable from a distance of say, my couch, and the system actually looks very nice and uniform on top of the receiver (both Onkyo name plates, display windows, and power buttons match up). The problem with this DVD player is that if a DVD or CD has even a single smudge, scratch, or weak burn in (DVD-R/CD-R) it will manage to find the spot and, once skipped over, notify you on screen that it’s skipping the ‘bad section.’

One last thing - CompUSA has since stopped offering the no questions asked return policy on Home Theatre Systems so if you purchased a system with one of these warranties and the warranty is still good; it may be a good time to upgrade!

Great System

I love this system. The sound is great for movies and equally great for listening to music on the back patio. Great buy!
