Exellent Value

Reviewer: G Janik  from ATL, GA   03/28/06
Have had this receiver for almost a year now, and it's still going strong. I have it in my theater room, so it does get used quite a bit. I purcharsed the refurb unit at a great price, and I have no regrets.

Onkyo is good stuff

Reviewer: Michael  from Illinois   03/06/06
I have previuosly owned an Onkyo Dolby Pro-Logic reciever and I guess I wore it out. So, when it came time to buy a new one and upgrade my system I looked no farther than Onkyo again. The 602 kicks some serious butt! It took me awhile to get all my settings where I wanted them, still may change a few, but when I did I was well pleased. Onkyo will always be choice!!!!!!!!!

Paired this receiver with a set of Polk surrounds and a Toshiba DLP TV. Works well over the whole gamut of use - movies, DVDs, CDs, and cable music stations. I am now ready to slowly replace all other audio and video components with Onkyo.

Great receiver

I was having problems with my mid-range Pioneer receiver, which was always having amp errors for no discernable reason. I've been a Pioneer fan for a long time, but decided to try this Onkyo model. The sound is better on the Onkyo, the machine has great features, and I'm completely happy with my purchase. I'll buy from Onkyo again.

Wow ! What a surprise ! The TX-SR602 kicks some serious butt. I watched "Apocalypse Now" last night and my next door neighbor said the dishes in her kitchen cabinets were moving ! Great Bass ! I'm going to buy one for my son and his wife. His neighbors complain about their T.V. being too loud. Wait until they expirence 85 Watts per channel with double bass ! Great product support. One phone call answed all my questions. They walked me thru my confusion. Awsome.

Onkyo Makes the Best A/V Receivers

Reviewer: Robert  from Vienna, VA   12/29/05
I purchased a TX-SR602 for a DIY Home Theatre System. I decided to go with Onkyo because of their great reputation for A/V Amps. I could not be more pleased with the quality and performance of the TX-SR602. I use this A/V Receiver to power a Polk Audio RM20 5.1 Surround Sound System, and the sound quality is flawless. Since I had limited funds, I purchased it from CompUSA auctions as a returned item, and I received one in great shape. I am planning a purchase of an Onkyo DVD Player - probably an SP502 from ShopOnkyo. Once I receive it and set it up, I will write a separate review of their DVD Player

Great Deal on B-stock

I got this past year reciever for half price. I really wanted it for 5.1 and the other 2 channels for the kitchen. I love all of the control I have over speaker levels and the imput/output options. Onkyo will always be my choice for recievers and I'm very pleased with this one so far. It's solid, heavy and beautiful black like my Onkyo DVD player (SP502) and CD player.

Multi-room capability and fine adjustment of speaker levels makes this a great deal!

Great receiver for the price.

I bought the TX-SR602B refurbished online and haven't regretted it. The optical and coax digital inputs works wonderfully with the my TIVO, XBOX, and DVD player. It drives my Polk speakers without a problem. Sound is exceptional for the price. Easy to setup and use.

Great Receiver - Great Price!

Reviewer: Mike  from Liberty Lake, WA   12/05/05
I purchased the TX-SR602 as a refurbished unit but unless it was labeled, I could not tell it from brand new. It took a couple of hours to set up and optimize the unit. Overall it has complemented my Polk 7.1 Home Theater system beautifully. What can I say, it is better than I expected for both music and home theater. I was so pleased with the receiver; I purchased an Onkyo DV-CP802 6-disc DVD player to complete my system.

A great product at a great price!

Found this receiver on closeout due to new model release. Very happy with the sound clarity. Clear sound all the way to max volume.

Purchased 602 as a refurb, but was planning in getting this unit even before I found it online as a refurb. Bought this to upgrade HTiB receiver and to simplify my setup. I love that it handles component switching, and so does my wife; now she only has to press one button to changes signals on to the TV. I only wish that there were more than 3 macro functions on the remote.

So far I am very pleased with the unit and have had no problems with it. The setup was simple and the sound is outstanding. I am now an Onkyo fan!

Wow!!!

Love the sound quality

Reviewer: Sanjaya  from Bethesda, MD   06/15/05
This is a solid receiver and I'm really pleased with the sound quality. I'm using it with all optical audio inputs and with BOSE speakers and I'm quite happy. I wish the remote control could control Motorola cable boxes but I couldn't find a code to do that bot other than that the receiver is great!

I upgraded from 501 to 602 and have not regret it one bit. The 602 offer 85 per channel. I matched it with the Athena audition series and now I like to watch movie at home better and going to theater.

Great Deal

After much research (and being completely satisfied with my Onkyo CD player) I decided on the SR602. Got a Refurb at great price. Especially love the powered zone 2 feature as I want to dedicate my Bose 10.2s to music only not home theatre. Hook-up is easy and the remote while on the large side and not backlit is NOT complicated.

Next purchase - Onkyo AMP!

Once bitten!

Reviewer: Paul  from Colorado   06/04/05
I have been extremely lucky. After decades of buying electronic equipment I've never been bitten by the defective bug. That is until now. As soon as I powered up my TX-SR602. The protection circuit shut it off. This would have been fine if I had connected something to it incorrectly. However, there was nothing connected to it. The first thing I do with all new equipment is power it up. I have read several reviews that stated the TX-SR602 model had problems with quality control. Well I thought it would never happen to me, so I boldly ordered it anyway. Onkyo products have always been reliable in the past. Surprise, back to the factory it goes. Because Onkyo is such a great company I will give it another chance. I just hope this is just not a case of "fool me once".

Quality and Convenience

I bought my Onkyo Receiver online and when I received it and hooked it up to my 7.1 speaker system I was just astonished!! The sound quality and all the wonderful features ! Incredible for the price, and what you get you can't believe it .

Good for the price!

Reviewer: Thanh  from TX   05/30/05
The unit is easy to setup. The remote is the most confusing one I have seen. It needs more colors (assigning difference color to different function mode, etc.). Good sound, but the power output seems a little weak for 85W/ch (by comparing to my old receiver). However, with all the features it offers, it is a very good unit for the price ($249.99 shipped for a factory refurbished one).

Great Receiver, Only 1 Problem...

Reviewer: Demetrius  from Atlanta, GA   05/17/05
I think that this is a great product. This was my 1st purchase of an Onkyo receiver. My only gripe about the receiver is with the EQ. Before I bought it, I didn't realize that the EQ, goes mute, when you are trying to make adjustments. At first, I thought that there was a problem with my receiver, but after speaking with a company rep., I found out that it was designed that way. As a consumer, my suggestion to Onkyo is to, please change this feature on future models.

Refurbed units are a steal!!!!!

Reviewer: Ralph  from Mass   05/05/05
I was deciding between the 702 and 602, but with the 602 being $100 cheaper; that made my decision. Don’t think I could justify the extra $100 for pre/pro, THX and 15 extra watts(which I doubt anyone would notice unless they lived in a train station) so the 602 was the one.

I have not been disappointed since I finally got a working unit. First refurb had some serious wiring problems internally and speakers would or would not work depending on what speaker was plugged in or not, was very strange. Definitely not user error, it was plain defective. Was disappointed at first as I never had a problem with Onkyo products. but the second was flawless and works great. Onkyo cannot be beat for price and performance, not to mention excellent CS and warranty.

I owned a 494(still do, in pool area now) and loved it...still do …but the new one sounds better and has plenty of power.!!! But I miss some of the older features on the old unit like being able to turn the sub on or off with a button on the front of the unit for music reasons or tv audio reasons. The menu was quite frustrating and I am an ace at these things. After your done you probably wont forget how to use it again. very indepth and takes a bit of time to setup.

But overall the unit sounds great and again Onkyo cannot be beat for price, performance and warranty. Excellent receiver!!!

This is a great receiver. Excellent quality!! You cannot find any other brand receiver with all these features and quality at this price.

Great Receiver!

Works. Great sound. UPS Destroyed the box and lost the remote. Had to get that replaced, but, replacement was fast and easy!

The sound is GREAT. Have a 7.1 speaker system hooked up to it in a brand new room and it's really incredible.

I'd recommend this to everyone. I think I'll replace my Denon with another one.

I'm definitely the type to over-research before I buy, and this is the receiver I ended up choosing. I do get to play with many receivers very frequently, so I have a bit of hands on experience to back up the research :). If I didn't want the on screen display, I could have easily chose with the TX-SR502 (I didn't need the extra speaker 7.1 provides over 6.1, but I'm sure I'll make use of it anyway). If I needed more wattage, THX features, up conversion, or I needed a lower crossover (my speakers do go pretty low very well, but few people with a sub have a use for a lower crossover) I'd have likely chose the TX-SR702.

The most comparable alternative brand as far as receivers go is Yamaha. Generally speaking, you'll get a little more wattage and a little less features and quality at the same price point. Sound quality and features were far more important to me than a little more wattage, hence my choice. Eighty-five watts per channel is more than enough for most rooms; I haven't had to set the volume over the 60 (of 100) mark yet.

The remote control has access to everything you'll need for everyday usage and then some. It is pretty large, but nothing too bad. I haven't been able to figure out how to set non-memorized stations with the remote and the joystick popped off once when I fell asleep on it (but it was easily put back on). Also, the remote doesn't support every conceivable product (my DVD/VHS combo isn't supported) and won't always make it easy to learn the buttons from the other remote (as was the case with said DVD/VHS combo). The rest of my electronics are supported right out of the book.

The on screen display is very handy, and I'm glad I chose a model that includes it; however, the LCD display on the receiver itself isn't difficult to use. It's large and easy to read at a distance.

The unit itself is larger than pictures might let on, but still manages to look very nice with its brushed front. The blue light behind the volume dial is a nice touch (matches the Onkyo 6 CD and DVD changers nicely :)), but easy to turn off with the dimmer.

The DSP modes are more than enough for me. For music, I generally use "Direct" but "All Stereo" makes an equally handy option for those who want to use all of their available channels without having the DSP alter their sound noticeably. For surround sound, all of the common choices are available.

I didn't give the auto-setup microphone a try, since I assumed I could do a better job. Whether I'm correct or not I couldn't say :).

All in all, I couldn't be happier. There are numerous niceties that I haven't even brought up that I didn't notice until I got the unit home and started playing around with it. With the possible exception of the previously mentioned Onkyo products, you won't find a better buy in the price range.

TX-SR602

Great step up in audio equipment. Works great with my Bose Acoustimass 15 Series II speakers. Looking forward to adding an Onkyo DV-CP702 DVD player to complete the system.

Great Receiver!

Reviewer: Aaron  from Atlanta   01/03/05
This unit is great. I was looking at several other high-end brands, but Onkyo provided the best bang for the buck in the 602. The selling point for me was the powered zone 2 option. I don't mind reverting to 5.1 when I am entertaining to have another source playing in another room. I look forward to buying more Onkyo products in the future.

Full of power,features,and personalization options

Reviewer: Luis Castro  from Saint Paul, MN   01/02/05
I bought the TX-SR602 to replace a TX-SR600 and I can only say that the improvements are huge! I really like the 7.1 capabililty, the auto set-up feature (with the microphone), the extra 5W/ch to reach 85W/ch, the 3 component inputs (I have a DVD and 2 HDTV boxes), the blue light around the the volume knob, and the zone 2 capability which is excellent. They are all very convenient features that every user would like to have.

But the nice thing about Onkyo is the sound, I like the features though but I really bought this receiver because of the 192/24 processors/converters in the main channels as well as the independent EQ function for each speaker: Personalization at its best! Although a bit bigger than other brands, the 602 remote is a big leap from the previous model as well.

Soundwise, there is nothing comparable in the market for the price range. Thanks for such a great product

Great for hard to find features

Reviewer: Scott  from Ohio   12/12/04
This receiver is excellent. The best feature on it is the 3 component inputs. I'm getting into the High Definition world and also currently have a DVD player and an Xbox hooked up to my old receiver so my main goal was to find a new receiver that could handle all of my input needs.

An Incredible Sound

Reviewer: Joe Hofgen  from San Diego   12/02/04
Two weeks ago I purchased the SR 602 on sale at an unbelievably low price of less than $400. Because my house was flooded we took the opportunity last year to string speaker wires throughout the downstairs while things were torn up. Wow...II am glad we did. After hooking up the system to a couple of speakers which I flush mounted to the wall, I was amazed at the clear, crisp sound...even at very high volumes.

The only frustration has been using the screw in speaker wire connections on the back of the unit which are somewhat cumbersome. As someone who hasn't had a quality sound system in a while, I have been very happy with this receiver. I can't imagine a better system at a better price!

just picked it up from Circuit CIty and got it all set up. sounds better than the TXDS676 it replaces (which I have had a few problems with). the remote is great, and i really liked the remote that controlled the 676. this is a very easy unit to set up and the sound really is unbelievable. i would highly recommend this product to anyone.

Back to Onkyo

Reviewer: Gerry  from Wayne , NJ   11/19/04
This is my first onkyo since my original in 1980. I've had others since;Yamaha (which this sr602 will replace. ) Sony, NAD , etc and decided to come back again because of the Onkyo history and the features of the 602. Just set it up and Wow! it is powerfull! I had to turn my Velodyne sub down over 10db. The only negative so far is the remote: It is very confusing ;will not except the codes for my new Samsund dpl 61" Tv. Tried them all, even the learn feature, to no avail.

also, cant seem to turn off the REC On light. Otherwise, seems great so far.

beautiful

Reviewer: Alex  from Los Angeles   10/22/04
looks and sounds absolutely great. the cosmetic appeal of the unit was very important in my decision to buy a new receiver. and this thing just looks great. the blue light is cool, but what's nice is that you can turn it off if you want. of course, it's going to sound beautiful because it's Onkyo. and it does. it's a pleasure to look at and hear. before i bought this unit, i asked a guy i knew who used to work for Bose and who does custom installs for very, very expensive systems told me to go with Onkyo. that's what he'll buy when he gets new equipment. i have a friend who's owned an Onkyo for over 10 years and he's still in love with his. my problem now is that i want to replace all my old equipment with new Onkyo stuff. i need a trust fund.

Wow - Glad I upgraded!

Reviewer: David  from Lockport, IL   10/12/04
After prurchasing my first Onkyo system nearly fifteen years ago, I decided it was time to upgrade to the latest technology in audio and surround sound processing even though my old Onkyo sounds as good as the first day I got it. Setting up the receiver was pretty straight forward as the printed documentation was clear and easy to understand and the on-screen (TV) programming was quite awesome. The only minor complaint I had was I couldn't use my existing FM antenna that was already mounted to the wall. The SR-602 has a newer type of coaxial connector for the FM antenna. After I connected everything and turned it on, I was blown away by the power of its 85W per channel. This clearly seemed louder, clearer, and crisper than my older 110W/channel system Onkyo system. As I was testing everything out from music from the FM tuner to various CDs, DVDs, and Satellite TV programming, I was very impressed by the multitude of Surround Sound and DSP selections. Too bad I had to work the next morning cause I could have sit there for the next few days watching movies and enjoying the awesome sound the 602 delivers. I am definately glad I upgraded.
