Plays CD's wonderfully, fails to play DVD

This unit has reliably played CD's for me for over a year. I can really tell the difference between the way the CD sounds played through this CD player in comparison to playing the CD through my computerwhen hooked up to the same receiver and speakers even with a high quality digital sound card.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for DVD playback. I initially checked this unit to make sure it would play back DVD's and everything looked OK. Since then I have been using it exclusively to play CD's for the past 1.5 years. I hooked it back up to a TV today and it fails to read any DVD disc, only CD's.
