Had trouble soon after purchasing. Now has troublre reading CD's and DVD's. Continues to read disk error much of the time. Now the standby light continues to flash and unit has discontinued working. Need to open the unit to retrieve the CD's just to throw the damn thing out. What a waste of time!

What were they thinking?

I've owned a reciever for 4 years and when it was time to upgrade my dvd player, I thought that going with Onkyo would give me the same quality I've come to expect. Boy was I wrong! The DV-CP500 worked fine for about a year, then started having problems. Not recognizing certain DVD's (giving me the dreaded "Disk Error" message), and then when it did start to play, it would end up skipping like the disk is scratched and pixelating the picture. That makes it not even usable as a dvd player and I've been relagated to using my playstation 2 to watch movies. Not what I had in mind when purchasing the Onkyo.

quality?

I have had this dvd player for about 3 years. For the first 2 years it produced good quality sound and video. It has always performed rather slowly compared to comperable products. For the last year, it has stopped recognizing cds. The dvd player worked well until the last month. Now it only works a fraction of the time. This is the only onkyo product I have owned. It has had the shortest lifespan of any audio/video component in my cabinets. For the money it cost, I think I will be looking at another companys product for a replacement.

I bought this player expecting it to last awhile. I was using cheap Reconton cables and then decided to upgrade to monster cables and then about a week later my player only gives me a disk error. loved it for awhile.

Disc error messages

I have had this unit for a little over 2 years - no problems. Now, it only recognizes DVD's. When I put a CD in, it tries to read it for 5 minutes and then gives a disc error message. This is NOT the quality product I would expect from Onkyo!

Product worked fine for about a month, the it stopped reading dvds and cds. Luckily, I purchased the player from a reputable dealer who swapped it out. The product has worked great for the last couple of months, but sometimes it seems to take some time for the machine to read dvds and cds.

problems, problems, problems!!

DVD player worked fine .... for about 6 months, then it started having problems. About 3/4 of the way thru a disk it would suddenly start skipping and the picture would become pixalated. We needed to continue the disc on another DVD player. About a year later (after it was out of warranty by 6 months) it locked up on me and wouldn't even open the drawer ... it was almost as if it thougth there was a disc stuck in a slot when the player was empty. I was able to correct the problem by opening the case, removing the turntable, and re-installing it. I've had to do this 3 times since. I would suspect other people are having similar issues, because there are quite a few of this particular unit available on web sites as "refurbished".

Nice Picture, Great Sound.

This 5 Disc DVD player produces really nice sound when playing both DVDs and CDs! I have read other reviews that suggest this player is not worth it but mine works great. My only regret is that it will not play my Fuji DVD+R and DVD+RW discs. Otherwise, I am very happy with it. I own seven Onkyo components and am very pleased with them!!!

This is a very poor performer

I am a big fan of ONKYO stuffs. Had their CD player for over 10 years without any single problem. So I was interested in getting this DVD player. The price was good and I was excited. But as I installed it I found it to be an extremely slow machine. Very slow respone to turning on and shifting discs around. The worst is, lately, it freezes up in the middle of a movie or all on a sudden the sound will drop off while the movie is running. Very disappointing. The remote is a tiny toy and is not backlit. ONKYO is expected to supply quality product. Why would such a reputed brand let its quality fall is a confusing question to me.
